The therapy principle of orthomolecular nutrition is based on the understanding that the human body requires over 100 vital nutrients for the healthy, smooth functioning of all organs. These include vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and essential fatty acids.
The term "orthomolecular" has its origin in orthos (Greek) = correct, good, and molecular, molecule (Latin) = building block of substances. Linus Pauling chose this term in 1968 because it clearly illustrates the therapy principle.
Key to health Orthomolecular medicine uses only substances that naturally occur in both our diet and our body. These are vital nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids. Our body cannot produce these on its own; they must be supplied regularly in sufficient quantities as micronutrients to maintain our health and performance.
The need for vital nutrients depends on various external and internal factors; dietary and lifestyle habits, age, health status, and environmental influences play a decisive role here.
In cases of illness, this need may be so increased that optimal coverage of vitamin and mineral requirements cannot be achieved even with a healthy, varied diet.
The founder of orthomolecular medicine, American biochemist and two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling, defined the principle of action as follows:
"Orthomolecular medicine is the preservation of good health and the treatment of diseases by altering the concentration of substances normally present in the body and responsible for health."
Even at the age of 92, Linus Pauling, mentally fresh and physically fit, was considered the best evidence for the success of orthomolecular medicine. Thanks to orthomolecular substances in high doses, such as 18g of vitamin C daily, he was able to maintain his vitality and health into old age.
Pauling drew attention to the nutritional problem of insufficient vital nutrient supply and its health consequences 35 years ago in the scientific journal Science (160/68). Pauling's recommendation was therefore "health protection and dietary treatment of diseases with orthomolecular substances in optimal doses."
The field of application of orthomolecular medicine includes the prevention and therapy of a wide range of diseases:
The administration of trace elements and vitamins in our practice is based on an analysis of your personal needs. A trace element determination through a full blood analysis, an amino acid profile, or an omega 3 and 6 determination are essential foundations for serious orthomolecular medicine.
The treatment is administered either in the form of tablets or powder. However, in cases of particular deficiency states or for prevention, infusions are often administered as well.
Specialist for internal medicine
After six years of study and six years of specialist training in the university hospitals in Mainz and Frankfurt in Germany, I started working with integrative therapy concepts early on. I was lucky to be supported by extremely competent teachers. This opened the door to a part-time course in preventive medicine at Dresden International University.
Furthermore, I acquired certificates of proficiency in homeopathy and neural therapy.
